Salut Basil,

I too have had the same trouble, usually when switching displays. I have
encountered this phenomenon on SuSE 8.0 and Mandrake 9.2. It is true that the
X server spins and locks up the CPU. I suspected the nVidia driver as the
cause.

With the nvidia driver you may want to check to not use the
Option "RenderAccel"
in your /etc/X11/XF86Config. With my nVidia 2Go it locked up the machine, when I open a special menu of OpenOffice. Though it is no problem in alldays work, I disabled it anyway.
This is no solution for Rikard, as this won't lock up the networkcard, only the X-server (incl keyboard/mouse).

Rikard, did you consider a serial-console for debugging... to look out for an Oops?
