kppp and modem with usb<->serial adapter

Hi!

I have an external serial modem which I plugged with a usb<-> serial adapter
to my laptop. This works fine with pilot-link and kppp. It also works fine
with 'pon', a dial up tool from debian.

BUT

It does not work with kppp! :( kppp recognizes my modem (with "Query
modem...", it dials but finally, it can't start pppd. The error is:

Jul 10 12:56:36 beaves pppd[11767]: pppd 2.4.2 started by dani, uid 1000
Jul 10 12:56:36 beaves pppd[11767]: using channel 8

Jul 10 12:57:12 beaves pppd[11767]: Connection terminated.
Jul 10 12:57:12 beaves pppd[11767]: Exit.

Anyone can give me any hint? It wouldn't be such a strange problem if I
couldn't dial up at all. But as I said, it works with 'pon'...

TIA!
