Funny you mention Alsa. I have two differnt computers that have Mandrake 10 on them and Alsa won't start on either of them.
Does KDE need Alsa running?
AFAIK, KDE will work fine with OSS sound drivers.
Actually, it is aRts that uses the sound driver and it will also work with either OSS or ALAS sound drivers.
