OK, Here is what solved the problem.
On XF86 4.3.0 the font directory /usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc has a bad font file in it named 12x13ja.pcf.gz.
This is solved in version 4.4.0. All I did was take the font file: ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.4.0/binaries/Linux-ix86-glibc23/Xfnts.tgz

On the way to success, I had to struggle with some problems to which this list helped a lot. To begin with, by default on RH9 xfs is used to manage fonts. Because of that I did not get clear indication about fonts problems when I unintentionally caused them. Eventually I found that xfs logs errors in /var/log/messages (system log). (start looking in the init startup script which leads you to the xfs config file (/etc/X11/fs/config) in it there is a directive " use-syslog = on"). So eventually I could find errors logs such as:
"Apr 8 01:48:20 harellaptop xfs: ignoring font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled (unreadable)"

Also to make sure old fonts versions were not cached I did plenty of fc-cache -vf to flush the cache before restarting xfs

Hi,

After installing KDE 3.2.1 I have an ugly looking font when selecting "Medium" font in Konsole. When selecting "Large" font it looks smaller than medium but seems to be as it used to. My machine is RH9 X11 is XF86 4.3.0
