open the file file /etc/sysconfig/desktop with your favorite editor.
make sure the contents of the file are as below:

DISPLAYMANAGER="KDE"
DESKTOP="KDE"


Reboot the machine. This works for my distro which is fedora core 1 + KDE 3.2
