Good evening Nicholas,

Holding the shift key down while clicking on two messages (one after 
the other) will select those two messages and all messages in 
between.

Holding the control key down while clicking on two messages (one after 
the other) will select those two messages only, but not the ones in 
between.

You can combine the two methods so that you can select blocks of 
messages independent of each other.

I do not know if there is any way to make a "mouse-drag-select" in 
KMail.
