In theory that shouldn't be necessary, are you sure that kmenuedit stores the
correct icon in the .desktop file? I believe KDE 3.2.0 had a bug there.
Can you provide the following information:
1) What is the full path of the *.desktop file that gets saved?
2) What was the full path of the original *.desktop file?
3) The changed applications-kmenuedit.menu file.
