startx problems

Hi

I've just finished compiling kde3.2 on slackware using the konstruct build system and am unable to get startx to load kde.  I've set up all my environment variables in .xinitrc as the README says.  My .xinitrc looks like this:

#!/bin/sh
export /home/gbell72/kde3.2/bin/startkde

export QTDIR=~/kde3.2
export KDEDIR=~/kde3.2
export KDEDIRS=~/kde3.2
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/home/gbell72/gbell72/kde3.2/lib
export PATH=/home/gbell72/kde3.2/bin:$PATH

When I startx I get this error /home/gbell72/.xinitrc: line 2: /home/gbell72/kde3.2/bin/startkde: not a valid identifier.  So I changed line 2 to read exec /home/gbell72/kde3.2/startkde, when I startx it loads a gui which shows a text box with "could not load kdeinit, check your installation"

When I click ok and get dropped back to a concole I see all kinds of commands not found such as, lnusertemp: comand not found, dcop_server_shutdown command not found, ksplash, command not found, etc.  I than ran 'printenv' but KDEDIR QTDIR do not appear to be setup in it.  using echo $QTDIR, echo $KDEDIR just return blank lines.  If anyone can point me in the right direction at what I'm doing wrong it would be appreciated.

Regards

Gardner
