When I do  "add files or directories", I get a box that shows the 
flies/directories in the folder where my ".kateproject" file is stored in. 
Maybe you chose an empty folder for this?
My version is cvs KDE_3_2_BRANCH from yesterday but it seems there were no 
changes recently.
