I also use kernel 2.6 and Arts is crashing all the time. Do you have a
crash handler installed? If not, Arts could keep crashing, hanging and
freezing without you noticing it. Except of course for the CPU drain. You
should check how many artsd processes are loaded when KDE gets slow.
