JPL Educator Workshop
When: Tuesday, May 9, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Where: UC Riverside, Highlander Union Building 302 South, Riverside, California
Target Audience: Teachers for grades K-8
Overview: Get students using the engineering design process to investigate structural engineering principles that will some day be used on Mars. Dig into Earth and life science concepts in this workshop from NASA/JPL Education and take home standards-aligned activities and lessons. Participants will use Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Crosscutting Concepts, such as Structure and Fuction, to build structures, revise their designs and test their improvements.
- This workshop is not available online; you must be physically present to participate.
- This workshop is limited to educators at U.S.-based institutions and organizations.

- Looking for Life – Using the fundamental criteria for life, students examine simulated extraterrestrial soil samples for signs of life.
- Lava Layering – Students learn about Earth processes by simulating and examining lava flows from a volcano model made of play dough.
- Spaghetti Anyone? Building with Pasta – Students use the engineering design process to build a structure to handle the greatest load and gain first-hand experience with compression and tension forces.
This free workshop is offered through NASA/JPL and the NASA Educator Professional Development Collaborative at Texas State University, which provides educators with NASA resources and materials that support STEM learning.
