Triple Scoop of Galactic Goodies
NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer dishes up a feast of cool cosmic treats from its first three years in orbit,
including, left to right:
Star-sprinkled swirl: The Silver Dollar galaxy, one of the brightest, dustiest nearby galaxies, seen edge-on.
Double dip: A spiral galaxy's arms embrace an elliptical galaxy in a gravitational dance.
Constellation crunch: A trio of spiral galaxies in the constellation Virgo.
Galaxy Evolution Explorer launched April 28, 2003 , on a mission to study the shape, brightness, size and distance of galaxies across 10 billion years of cosmic history. Its onboard telescope sweeps the skies in search of ultraviolet light sources.
