Sigh, same crash again today.
Ok, I can't take it anymore, this amount of crashing and data loss is
not something I can deal with.

I went back to kernel 4.1.3, where things were working well enough.
Hopefully I won't stay stuck with 4.1 forever or until I get rid of my
intel graphics chipset.

Thanks for looking and let me know if you have a fixed driver and/or
kernel to try.
