Ok, no errors reported by the kernel and the cursor seems to be updating fine. There's a utility xf86-video-intel/tools/cursor which you can run to query the current X cursor. Might be a little tricky to run from lightdm - ssh in and faff around with xauth. If you can ssh in, also grabbing /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_display_info when the cursor is invisible would be useful as well.
