We're trying to introduce support for writeback connectors, a way to expose in DRM the hardware functionality from display engines that allows to write back into memory the result of the DE's composition of supported planes. Generic DRM support is available here [1] and will be merged once this patchset gets approved for inclusion into igt. VC4 support for writeback is added here [2] and for mali-dp is added here [3].
