Did you try to "strace" it while running? Maybe you can see where it hangs.
I resolved I complied cyrus-sasl with the option :

pop3d now are 50

Since the only change made to the server was the upgrade version of
cyrus-imapd IMAP what I can see to fine the problem on server ?
What version did you upgrade from? If from 2.3.x or prior you are most
likely seeing a high load due to index upgrades. Id upgraded about 3
weeks ago and had high loads for about 2 hours.
