You can have a look at file fragmentation. We noticed severe degradation on ext3fs. More than 60% of the spool was fragmented. Try a filefrag on your data. To correct it, you have to copy to a fresh new spool

Fulls take a lot longer, but I can't give you any time estimates now.
For the moment we don't backup the replica's. Nor use them. But we
could do it.
We are 'planning' a storage migration too the coming months.
