By default, there's no way to access UUIDs via IMAP at all since they're not part of the IMAP spec. The UUID size chosen was done by David Carter when he implemented replication. It would be possible to change them again, but it would mean changing the cyrus.index file format and upgrading all cyrus.index files. Seemed easier not to do that.
