in cyrus-imap 2.3.7, when unexpunge can't open the mailbox meta
files or
when it can't open & lock the cyrus.expunge file it logs:
"unable to open/lock mailbox (null)"
What exactly is the error message that you are seeing?

And offcourse i revice mail and can log on to the mailbox....

"Can't lock null" in this case means that unexpunge didn't find the
mailbox in question in mailboxes.db.
