Thanks for the hints! While it doesn't affect my mailserver now since I've switched to XFS, it may help me and other list members in similar situations.

Not that it matters now since you've switched, but you were probably

Or using the wrong I/O scheduler in the Linux 2.6 kernel... Make sure you use "deadline" instead of the "anticipatory" default I/O scheduler in 2.6.
