delivery to non-existent folder

What happens if I try to deliver mail to a mailbox that doesn't exist?
And is this documented anywhere?

I believe that if a seive script in cyrus attempts to direct mail to a
non-existent mailbox, the mail will go to the INBOX instead.

What if I deliver to auser+box via lmtp and user.auser.box doesn't
exist?

I suppose that boxes not associated with a user represent yet another
case, though it's of less immediate interest.

I'll be using Cyrus 2.2, if that matters.
