As to how to digitally preserve bits in a fully reliable way, with geographic backup and access, used widely in the library community, look at:

It is a pretty much solved problem, at least at the scale of anything the IETF does, and the technological problems and challenges in preservation are more subtle than most understand.

The worry with laser printers is adhesion of the toner to the paper, e.g.
