IMO, it would be a tremendous disservice to the community to discontinue 
support for FTP.   Even if the vast majority of traffic is from mirrors, 
those mirrors are still presumably being used.

HTTP (without extensions) is not a good alternative because it does not 
reliably facilitate mirroring.   rsync is not a standard protocol and is 
somewhat specific to UNIX-like systems.
