We usually use a chainsaw for similar circumstances.

For a cleaner cut, there are circular saws with 9 and 10" blades:

Or, the one I have, a Sawzall (reciprocating saw) with a long enough blade--9" should do either way. The taller the blade the cleaner and straighter the cut.
