As discussed many months ago on this list, it is extremely difficult to give instructions beyond "check with your local consulate or embassy" for the exact rules and typical durations of the visa. In my case, for example, the duration typically granted by San Francisco (where I can walk into the consulate, past a certain group of prot..., oh, never mind) is DIFFERENT from Los Angeles, at least so I have been told by the visa wizards.
