RFC 5321 was written after RFC 3552, and it was found to be satisfactory
at the time.

Agreed, but I don't think that binds our decisions today. The question is whether
this document has adequate security considerations and in my opinion it
does not.


The current document is a revision that worked to avoid introducing new
technical substance.

And that's why I can live with a normative reference to the AS, provided that
that it is sufficiently complete.
