I've found this one regarding Minneapolis as a venue selection. I think you'll find some more worrying things than the State Department warnings, even for US citizens (just read the first couple pages):

I don't think he knew that I have been to many places that call for visas for US Passport holders. That's the privilege argument. The other thing is that you really shouldn't be on business in places where a tourist visa might be granted automatically, but a business visa might be required.

China, at least in the cities with flights to the US and Europe, is not a big deal. How does one think that business works? It's a big place, so a foreign person might raise some eyebrows in more rural places. It's the same as anywhere else, in that regard.
