No need to speculate. They broke my VPN while I was in Beijing.

I don't think they were targeting me, as I was just there to see the physical Great Wall. It's messy and imprecise.

Go with the understanding that the Internet will be different. You'll want "OsmAnd Maps" (this downloads maps of Beijing etc, because your phone is probably not going to.be great) and a WeChat account. The latter can be a bit tough to acquire, but put the work in. The sigh of relief when you say "can we use WeChat?" is not to be underestimated.
