Re: IETF mailing lists delivery issues

This may be just one of those coincidences but my suspicion is not.

I see that for a day or two last week, around Thursday, the format of the Subject of the I-D announcements to the relevant WG lists changed. In particular, the space character after the list name vanished - it has now re-appeared. This has happened previously.

This changes the order of the collation of the announcements, something I rely on on such a busy list to catch announcements I may have missed. I have a particular interest in YANG and YANG I-D can appear on a very large number of lists so tracking the I-D announcements is my way of keeping up-to-date.

This has happened before. I hope that it does not happen again.

Subject: IETF mailing lists delivery issues

Earlier this week, the mailing list system that manages the IETF, IRTF, IAB, IESG and RFC Editor lists was migrated from Mailman 2 to Mailman 3. For some time after the migration, this system was receiving but not reliably distributing emails.

Unless there are some remaining edge cases that we have not yet discovered, all messages now being received are being delivered. The mail archive [1] reliably records messages distributed to lists and if you are unsure if a message has been delivered then please check the archive. If a message was distributed to the list, then it will be in the archive; if a message is not in the archive, then it was not distributed to the list.

There remains a backlog of messages that were sent earlier this week that were not delivered. We have those message in the system cache but identifying them as undelivered is proving difficult. Work on delivering these messages is ongoing and is expected to take several days to complete, but it is possible that they won't be recoverable. If your message is urgent then please resend it but please be aware that the original may still be delivered as well.

For further information on the changes and work on recovering messages, we will keep this blog post [2] updated and a full technical debrief will be provided to the tools-discuss list when the post mortem has been completed.

Please feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions or concerns.
