What about South America and India. I've heard that both are substantially less expensive than the US/Europe/Japan for vacation accomodations. Does the same hold for convention costs?

Aren't London and Yokohama quite expensive relative to other possible alternatives in the area? I don't know about Asia but there must be well-connected (flightwise) places in Europe that cost less then London to host a meeting.
