Title : RTP Payload Format for Generic Forward Error Correction
Author(s) : A. Li
Filename : draft-ietf-avt-ulp-17.txt
Pages : 44
Date : 2006-3-21
This document specifies a payload format for generic Forward
Error Correction (FEC) for media data encapsulated in RTP. It is
based on the exclusive-or (parity) operation, and it is a
generalized algorithm that includes both simple parity
protection in the baseline mode and Uneven Level Protection
(ULP) in the extended mode. The payload format described in this
draft allows end systems to apply protection using various
protection lengths and levels, in addition to using various
protection group sizes to adapt to different media and channel
characteristic. It enables complete recovery of the protected
packets or partial recovery of the critical parts of the payload
depending on the packet loss situation. This scheme is
completely backward compatible with non-FEC capable hosts. The
receivers that do not implement FEC can still work by simply
ignoring the protection data. This specification obsoletes RFC
2733 and RFC 3009.

NOTE: The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
how to manipulate these messages.
Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
