ThinkLight cannot be turned on

On my X230 and X250, the ThinkLight can only be turned off, but not on, though /sys/class/leds/tpacpi::think/birghtness, /proc/acpi/ibm/light and /proc/acpi/ibm/cmos. Other users report the same problem (also mentioning the models X1 Carbon, T430, T530 and W530):

It seems something changed in the BIOS/ACPI when they added support for keyboard backlight.
