FWIW, BIOS hotkey Fn+Space cycles through off, dim backlight, full backlight and full thinklight. /sys/class/leds/tpacpi::thinklight/brightness can be read (showing either 0 or 255) but writes are ignored. Dito for /proc/acpi/ibm/light.
