The blank screen is likely caused by
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=76103. I've applied the patch
locally to the Debian 3.14 kernel sources, backported the relevant
thinkpad_acpi patches, and everything is working great. I also filed a
Debian bug report [1] to track the display issue.
