You might want to take a look at [1]. I guess some of the patches
finally went into 3.13. I have an x230 at work but I won't be able to
test it before next week.

It might be wise to test without any boot option. Also note that the
final outcome might just be that you *need* something in userspace to
handle the brightness keys…
