-19 is -ENODEV.  And I can't seem to reproduce this, even if I force my T43
to mute-only using "volume_capabilities=2" :(   The error is happening
inside the ALSA snd_card_register() function.

What comes to mind is a few #ifndefs CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED in the ALSA
core code.  Can I have your kernel config, please?
