Dear Greg,

	The install I have now (mostly) works, and therefore I don't want to fix it!  At least not right now.  =D 

	I think I've found the cause of the problem: the host uses a NIS login server and that is serving the group info.  If I specify a local group, then the device group ownership is set properly.  

	I discovered this after testing on an Ubuntu 10.10 box that isn't connected to the NIS server, so thank you for a helpful hint!
