udev wait timeout

I'm running FC6 with kernel 2.6.19-1.2895. udev times out during bootup and continues in the background, making a race condition to load device drivers. Sometimes it loads the ivtv and graphics drivers in time and sometimes it doesn't, leaving me with no X window and forcing another crap shoot reboot. How can I determine what is causing the delay? Is there a udev log?

From some forum posts it looks like udev itself may be causing the problem. How do I determine what version of udev I'm running and how do I update it? yum doesn't seem to recognize udev as a valid package.

Thanks.
