For OpenWrt, the extra curl dependency would be a significant inconvenience. I would strongly prefer moving the AFC server communication outside of hostapd and into a separate utility, which communicates with hostapd via control socket. That way we could easily re-implement the http/json part with other components that are already part of the OpenWrt base system.
