I did provide the exact hardware - Raspberry Pi 3 B+
The only indication in the syslog of the problem, where wifi devices
could not connect, is the one associated message and two disassociated
message for the device trying to connect.
Now that I have reverted to 2:2.4-1+deb9u2 I do not have an easy way to
recreate the problem.
So, I guess we will have to wait and see if I was the only one with the
problem.
Thanks for reading.

Yesterday I did an apt update && apt upgrade and installed hostap
2:2.6-21~bpo9~rpt1 . After a reboot my wifi devices could no longer
connect. I would see one associated message and two disassociated messages.
Of course, there were no changes to hostapd.conf
My temporary solution was to revert to 2.4 via the command apt install
hostapd=2:2.4-1+deb9u2 after removing 2.6. With no other changes I was
able to connect my wifi devices once again.
I’m sorry hostapd 2.6 doesn’t work for you. It would be more helpful
if you provided more information on what your hardware is and what the
exact failures are, e.g. by providing logs.
