I think your patch is precious and this bug is serious. So I can agree fixing root bug to make this patch work correctly is best way. Indeed I spent some time for debugging this. Though I could not solve this within the time. Now I have motivation to make test sets sane. Because I am trying to make test sets to be python3 compatible. So I want to remove this bug immediately by this workaround.
