Why do I lose debug messages when I use a rsyslog filter to redirect hostapd and wpa_supplicant messages to separate files?

This question is in the title.

I use an rsyslog filter to redirect syslog messages to different files. The 
standard messages redirect just fine, but all the debug stuff dissappears!

Anyone got any ideas?
