It fails running the first command:

This is normally a bug in some application using the D-Bus library.

Edit : Thanks much for the help, but more reading on the Net shows that the ath9k driver was built by Atheros and appears to be buggy.

I found an old USB wifi connector (TrendNet TEW-444UB using Atheros AR5523), which worked right away.

I'll just disable the on-board wifi chip and use an external USB chip instead.
