Also, what is the exact error message that you get and what are you doing when you're getting it? Ubuntu 12.04 includes an early version of GTK 3; version 3.4 I belive. If that version is good enough then installing the libgtk-3-dev package should be enough. If you want to install a later version for test or development purposes then using JHBuild [1] is often easiest. It will also be able to build most of the dependencies for you.
