There is quite an arcane make rule in gio/tests/Makefile.am:
test.gresource: test.gresource.xml Makefile $(shell $(glib_compile_resources) --sourcedir=$(srcdir) --generate-dependencies $(srcdir)/test.g
resource.xml)
$(AM_V_GEN) $(glib_compile_resources) --target=$@ --sourcedir=$(srcdir) $<
$(shell ...) should spawn a new shell which tallies with your "child process".
As to why it is failing, I don't know...
You reached your shells maximum limit of processes (maxproc)?
Why would something like fork() fail?
