thanks paul, that is exactly the knowledge gap i was suffering; gratefully, no more, all questions and issues have been addressed.

and in the absence of a global solution that covers every possible installation type, an ad-hoc script that gets the job done per app is fine by me.

I suggest you read the function fixup_bundle_environment() in this file:

(be sure to read the apple one, not the second one for Linux)

and then read:

http://subversion.ardour.org/svn/ardour2/branches/3.0/tools/osx_packaging/osx_build

these two together will explain how we do this for Ardour and Mixbus.
the 2nd one is a butt ugly shell script that gets the job done, but
i'm not too proud of its ad-hoc nature.
