That's odd, as you gave a linker error(!)
Looks as though gtk's configure.ac needs something based on
AC_PATH_XTRA
CPPFLAGS="$CPPFLAGS $X_CFLAGS"
LDFLAGS="$LDFLAGS $X_LIBS"
AC_CHECK_LIB([Xcomposite], [XCompositeReleaseOverlayWindow],
[stuff to do if found])
