Wow. Almost a full year later, I've found the solution to this issue. I found it on the xfce mailing list: http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.desktop.xfce.devel.version4/17123

Basically, when running ./configure on darwin, if you get this error, you need to pass in --disable-visibility, and it'll handle the problem.
