It would because it would work if you put the content there any other time. IOW it is a completely unecessary complication. The "realized" signal is related to the creation of resources on the X-server side, but this does not influence whether the widget objects can hold the data or not. It always can. Sometimes you need the widget to be realized, e.g. if you want to do something that depends on its GdkScreen but that's something quite different.
