Are you sure you want to display a custom gif image? You could use GtkSpinner [0] for that purpose. If you really don't want to use the standard GTK+ widget and would rather use your custom image, maybe you can have a look at the code that has been removed [1] from nautilus when they switched from their custom throbber to GtkSpinner.
